Ice Watching   11 comments

What an eventful day yesterday, there I was all suited up in my survival gear waiting for our chopper to arrive, then we heard it was delayed (which happens) then we heard why. A helicopter has gone down. Hearing that hits you right in the gut, memories of 2009 come back when 16 people lost there live’s going home on a chopper. Then the news came in it had ditched and all 14 onboard were in a life raft, our chopper was the first on the scene and keeping an eye on until help arrived. Phew! All 14 were back on dry land later that day, well done to all involved in the rescue.

So what has this got to do with todays photo I hear you say? Not a lot really, its just this is my all time favourite photo and wanted to share, their might come a day when I can’t post.

Ice Moves   8 comments

Back to Greenland today and on the hunt for those pesky icebergs. This was one of the icebergs we couldn’t move by towing due to the shape, the tow rope would just slip off the top. In this case what we do is slowly reverse up to the iceberg and when we get nice and close we put the boat on full power using all the 25,000 bhp and use the wash from the propeller to move it, slow going but great photo opportunities. Hope you enjoy, don’t forget to follow me using the box in the top right corner, and feel free to leave a comment or suggestion below.

Whale Tail   4 comments

Finally leaving Aasiaat and out to open water and I spot my first whale, Taken back by the beauty I forget about my camera (you can tell I’m not a pro) but just managed to catch the tail end. (so to speak). I was still very happy about the shot so e-mailed it to my wife, her reply, is that a bird?

Aasiaat   2 comments

Like most cites in Greenland the houses are very colourful, I was told the colour of your house depicts what job you do, so in the middle of the night (Winter) and you’re in desperate need of a plumber you just look for a yellow house, mmm don’t know about that. I just think they would look pretty cool when the whole place is covered in snow.

As we left Aasiaat and headed for open water I had to take this shot. I wonder who lives in the purple house?

I added a bit of Tilt & Shift for fun.

Summer in Aasiaat   2 comments

After a short flight from Kangerlussuaq we arrived in Aasiaat and a landing that was something out of Swarm, (a ride at Thorpe Park that the kids took me on last week) This is Greenland in the summer, beautiful, and 24 hours of daylight to enjoy it, although the mosquitoes do get to you after a while so take repellent. While we were still along side (tied to the wharf) this was the view from my cabin, it’s an old whaling station and Seal tannery. Some people pay for views like this but I’m so lucky it’s all part of the job.

Nice Ice   Leave a comment

I was working in Greenland for a month, we were suppose to be installing a sonar array on the sea bed but instead spend the entire time moving icebergs away from a rig.
