About Me

Why Rigmover?

I think I had the best job in the world! you see I moved and positioned Oil Rigs at sea. Oil Rig is a pretty non-descript name because it can be anything that floats really, from your standard mobile drilling unit to Jack-ups to floating Hotels, known as Floatels. If it floats it can be moved.

Being interested in photography and having a job that allowed me to travel and was exciting, it seemed that both my loves, apart from my wife, went hand in hand. However, I didn’t pick up my first semi-decent camera, a Sony Nex-5 until 2011 and on a working trip to Greenland I captured this shot below, it’s not great, but I like it, and I liked showing it to folk, who in turn would ask me lots of questions such as, what I was doing in Greenland/at sea/for a job?, So I started a blog in 2012. Now, let’s be clear, I’m not a writer or a photographer, it’s just a hobby, and while it lasted it allowed me to express how much I enjoyed my job and taking photos. I even learnt how to spell!!. Unfortunately after an accident four years ago I’ve been unable to do the job I love and have only just got back into photography. So I’ll post some of my old blogs on here as well as some new ones.

Hope you enjoy!

  8. Don’t have any awards to offer but I think it’s great you’re blogging. I quit working on drilling rigs (mostly mudlogging, I’m a geo) a couple years ago to focus on the photog., but may be returning soon. This encourages me to keep up the blogging when/if I do. Thanks.

  9. Hi there,

I’m the second mate on the Maersk laser, I found your blog after searching for info about the laser, coincidentally for my own blog, I started it 2weeks ago and after seeing your blog it’s definitely given me a whole new level of professionalism to reach with my own.

I hope all is well over there.

  10. You say that you are not a photographer, but you are very talented and I look forward to seeing more of your shots!
By the way, like yourself, I love travelling too. And until now, the most beautiful place that I have visited, in my opinion, is your home country: New Zealand 🙂

Stumbled on your blog via Adam Allegro’s blog, you have some great photos and coincidentally I was watching a documentary about rig movers only a couple of nights ago! You must get to see some awesome stuff to photograph as you are doing your job as well as while your feet are on solid ground.

  22. Hi Rigmover,
Thanks for stopping by my blog. I’m glad you liked some of my posts. That allowed me to find yours. I like it. I’ve also done a few rig moves. My rigs are all DP tho and basically we move ourselves, even if we do have tugs sometimes. I LOVE working offshore. I can see you enjoy it too. It’s cool that you’re in London. I wish I could go somewhere other than the Gulf of Mexico again. The weather is better here but that’s about all I can say for it.
Fair winds and following seas! 😉

  25. I’m so glad I saw you over at Lenscaper’s blog. When I saw “rigmover,” I just had to come look, and my suspicions were confirmed. I live at the fringe of Galveston Bay, have done some sailing, and for years used the Bullwinkle rig in Port Aransas as a landmark. When they towed that out to sea, mariners of every sort were discombobulated for months.

I’m looking forward to browsing around, and learning from your photography, too. I’ve got my first digital camera, and have discovered that looking at lots and lots of good photos is both motivation and instructive. Cheers!
