South Coast

Hastings

Hope you all had a great weekend, I managed to take the wife away and spend a relaxing weekend in Hastings, we stayed in a stunning 5 star B&B called The Cloudesley in St Leonards-on-Sea, just a short walk from the old town in Hastings.

Hastings is a town and borough in the county of East Sussex on the south coast of England. The town is located 53 miles south east of London, and has an estimated population of 86,900.

In historical terms, Hastings can claim fame through its connection with the Norman conquest of England; and also because it became one of the medieval Cinque Ports. Hastings was, for centuries, an important fishing port; although nowadays much reduced, it still has the largest beach-based fishing fleet in England. The town became a watering place in the 1760s, and then, with the coming of the railway, a seaside resort.

  1. Nice angle. How old do you think the boat is?
when you live with a sea and boat lover, lots of boat pics appear, and also the real thing.

    • Hi Menhir1, I did a search but was unable to find any age or data about this boat, I would say it would be pretty old.
      Thanks.

      • The port of registration of this boat, RX, is Rye. The harbour master might be able to access an almanac with some specific information.

  4. A wee bit of research shows that this boat is popular with photographers. There are monochrome pics and one interesting photo had the boat photographed with a winch in front, presumably pulling it up on to the beach. Hubby used to have some pictures of the Hastings Beach Boats framed and displayed on the wall. I am now wondering if RX142 was one of them!

  10. That’s a lovely photo of a very beautifully constructed boat. I would never have guessed that Hastings had the largest beach-based fishing fleet in England, I’m really quite surprised by that. I have been to Hastings, but it was many years ago. I wouldn’t mind another visit after seeing your pretty picture.

  11. Very well composed, and your processing has retained tremendous detail in the shadow area of the hull of the boat
